Health Information

Benign liver tumor (liver cyst)

Summary/Definition

A liver cyst is a formation inside the liver consisting of simple liquid cavities that can occur at any age. In most cases, liver cysts form in isolation, but in rare cases, they can also form in the kidneys.

It is known that simple cysts are more often formed in the right lobe of the liver. According to statistics, women have simple cysts about 1.5 times more often than men, while symptomatic or complex cysts occur about 9 times more often in women than in men.

Symptoms

Cyst is rarely accompanied by symptoms. However, in rare cases with large cyst sizes, pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen and bloating may occur.

Diagnostics

Usually, cysts are detected accidentally during an ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity or computed tomography in the diagnosis of other diseases.

Treatment and course of the disease

There are no cases when the cyst progresses into a malignant tumor, and surgical treatment is not required, except in cases where complications such as bleeding and infection due to cyst rupture occur.
